Russian visa sponsoring letter for the former Spanish judge Baltazar Garzon, dated of 22 March, 2019, signed by the Russian senator Leonid Slutsky, on the letterhead of the Slutsky’s “Russian Peace foundation”. The visa is asked with one year validity (from 07 April 2019 to 6 April 2020).
In 2015, as chairman of the board of the Russian Peace Foundation, Slutsky invited French parliamentarians led by the deputy of the French National Assembly Thierry Mariani to visit Crimea. In 2016, Slutsky again accompanied the French parliamentarians to Crimea, and also facilitated their arrival on the peninsula in 2019, where the delegation was personally received by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Slutsky is among Russian officials sanctioned by EU, US and Canada because of Crimea annexation.
Garzón formerly served on Spain’s central criminal court, the Audiencia Nacional, and was the examining magistrate of the Juzgado Central de Instrucción No. 5, which investigates the most important criminal cases in Spain, including terrorism, organised crime, and money laundering. In 2008, he investigated the Troika case – Russian Tambovskaya organized crime group. In 2011, he was suspended from judicial activity and in 2012 he was convicted of illegal wiretapping and disbarred for a period of 11 years. The UN Human rights committee concluded that the sentence is unfair.
